How much food for a party?

The right amount of party food depends on the time of day, how long the event runs, and whether you're serving a full meal or just snacks. This party food calculator uses standard catering portions per guest, then adjusts for event length.

Rules of thumb per guest

Don't forget

Offer a vegetarian option, plan for ice and drinks separately, and round up for hearty eaters. It's always better to have a little extra than to run short.

Frequently asked questions

How much food do I need for a party?

Enter your guest count and event type into the party food calculator. For a full meal, plan about ½ lb of main protein, two sides, a few appetizers, and one dessert per guest; for an appetizer-only party, plan 10–14 bites per person.

How much food for a party of 50?

For 50 guests at a full meal, plan roughly 25 lb of main protein, plenty of sides, around 200 appetizer pieces, and 50 dessert servings. Add 10–15% if your crowd eats heartily.

How many appetizers per person?

If appetizers are served before a meal, plan 4–6 pieces per person. If they ARE the meal (a cocktail or heavy-apps party), plan 10–14 pieces per person over the first two hours.
